I read the book Squire. It is the third book in the quartet Protector of the Small. Kel, the main character, is a "protector of the small" because she always helps younger or less significant people. Whenever she finds out that someone is being bullied, whether it's her maid or a commoner she has never seen before, she always puts a stop to it. Here the author is trying to say that you should always help those in need.
Also, she is training as a knight. She is the first known female squire in years. When she had first started as a page, she was given a lot of trouble from other pages. Most people hadn't believed that she would get through her first year. She proved that she could keep up with everything and became a squire. By now people have realized that she is better than some of the other male squires, also. She still needs to pass the Ordeal of Knighthood before she fulfills her dream, though. I think that the author is trying to say that even though it will be hard at times, you should always try and keep trying to fulfill your dream, whatever it is.

Anna, What motivates her to protect others, to do what other women have not? What gives her the strength to become this heroine? Have you read any books by Ursla Le Guin? If not, check them out! Mrs. G
What need is she satisfying when she works hard and proves others wrong? Is that the same need that motivates her to help those in need?
How will her quality world change when she passes the Ordeal of Knighthood?
Is this a character that you admire? Why or why not?

Here are the answers to those questions in order:
She believes that all people should get the same treatment. She sees another person when looking at a peasant, not a silly little peasant that doesn't matter. It also helps that her parents have the same ideas.
There is a female knight in Tortall already. That person, Alanna, was pretending to be a boy as she went through the steps of becoming a knight. Keladry is the first girl to go through the steps of a knight with everyone else knowing she is a girl. Alanna is her hero.
She is training to be a knight. The code of chivalry states that you should protect those who need your protection (even though most nobles who are knights don't really follow it that well when it comes to peasants). When she was a page, she saw older pages abusing the rule that older pages could ask the younger pages to do some favors for them. She just kept up with it.
No, I have not read any books by Ursla Le Guin.
She is satisfying the need for power. She shows people that she is not just a pretty lady that you can easily push away.
It is not the same need motivating her to help people. She is doing that because she feels it is right.
She will then be in service to the Crown. She will have to obey orders and maybe conduct a squad in battle. By then, people should realize she can do anything that a male knight can do.
I admire her for following her dream no matter what. She goes through many hardships and never turns back.
